It most certainly is, I have found my pages being indexed in search engines (the plugin I use for my WordPress blogs submits a sitemap to Google, Bing, Yahoo & Ask) within hours of me submitting my sitemaps. It only takes about ten seconds and is well worth it.

I don't believe it will hurt your site as your Facebook fan page is associated with Facebook, surely? Personally I don't believe paying for likes will do you any good apart from make your fan page count look a bit better.

I don't buy links, but I do sell them. I have a policy of only accepting links that are in a similar niche to the site I'm running. I think if you run a site about football then it looks bad if you carry links about car insurance. :)

I've only used Twitter and Facebook and I get a lot more success form Twitter so I will go with them. But I'm not selling anything, just promoting my articles, so if you are selling something then maybe Facebook and their ads is the way to go. Has anyone got any success with Google+?
