What is XML?

In computing, Extensible Markup Language is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable.
 
XML describes the content in terms of what data is being described. For example, the word "phonenum" placed within markup tags could indicate that the data that followed was a phone number
 
Avid readers of HTML Goodies already know that XML is mentioned in two other tutorials (as of 5/11/98): HTML 4.0 and the Active Channel Tutorial. The language is starting to make a few in-roads into the Web and that makes a few people nervous.
