SEO is Search Engine Optimization and SEM is Search Engine Marketing both have same functionality but different way to do it.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. SEO is the part of the SEM. SEO is a free of cost technique to effect the SERP results and promote brands and business. On the other hand SEM is collectivaly part of Paid and free techniques of business promotion. Part of SEM

SEO stand for Search engine optimization. SEO is best to improve keyword ranking. SMO stand for Social Media Optimization. SMO is way of gain Traffic on our sites.
 
Both are very loose terms, SEO could theoretically be considered a part of SEM - since you are marketing your web site by optimizing it's rankings in the natural search results through SEO. SEM on it's own though typically refers to the use of paid advertising channels, such as Google AdWords and Bing Ads.

At companies I've worked for in the past, SEO meant free traffic, and SEM meant paid traffic.
