Most of the crawlers of the search engines or bots use xml sitemap of your pages to fetch the pages and if you are talking about html sitemap, then it is used in websites for the better navigation.

The XML sitemap is a way to tell Google about all the important pages of the website. Sitemap has to submit through Google Webmaster. It is useful for SEO due to this Googlebot knows easily each of the pages of the website.

Sitemap have two type:
Sitemap HTML - This one is for User
Sitemap XML - This one is for google
