What is semantic HTML?

Semantic HTML is the use of HTML markup to reinforce the semantics, or meaning, of the information in webpages and web applications rather than merely to define its presentation or look.

I think semantic HTML can possibly prompt less bloated code, which would mean quicker loading pages- - semantic HTML doesn't ensure more succinct code, however I'd say regularly if the designer is strict on semantics, the coder is probably going to be more mindful about adding superfluous lines of code-HTML or CSS.
