What is ISO certification and why is it important?

I keep hearing people throw around “ISO certified” like it automatically means a company is trustworthy, but I honestly don’t fully get what it actually involves. I run a small manufacturing business with my brother, and recently one of our potential clients asked if we had ISO certification before they’d even consider working with us. That caught me off guard a bit.

I looked it up and found a bunch of different ISO standards, audits, paperwork, compliance stuff etc. Some people make it sound super important, while others say it’s mostly for bigger companies trying to look official.

So now I’m wondering… does ISO certification genuinely improve how a business operates, or is it more of a box-checking thing for clients and contracts?
Would be nice to hear from someone who’s actually gone through the process because right now it feels a little confusing from the outside.
