what is internal and external links?

External links are given more importance than internal links on a page. They are only counted once by google as per my understanding. Each individual link from the outside will be taken into consideration by SE crawlers that help to rank a keyword well.
 
External Links are hyperlinks that point at (target) any domain other than the domain the link exists on (source).

In layman's terms, if another website links to you, this is considered an external link to your site. Similarly, if you link out to another website, this is also considered an external link.
 
In internal link is one that goes to other areas within your site.
An external link is one that goes to another URL outside of your site, or links from other sites to yours.

The menu at the top of this forum are internal links.

These type of links are useful for three reasons:
* They allow users to navigate a website.
* They help establish information hierarchy for the given website.
* They help spread link juice (ranking power) around websites.
