Backlinks are incoming links to a webpage. When a webpage links to any other page, it's called a backlink. In the past, backlinks were the major metric for the ranking of a webpage. A page with a lot of backlinks tended to rank higher on all major search engines, including Google.

The replies to this thread have pretty much summed up what a backlink is but a backlink can be so much more than a link back to your website. The backlink has a weight scale which governs how powerful the backlink is. In the past websites that had a lower page rank which you managed to get a backlink from would not have much merit to the search engines eyes. However a pagerank for example of 9 from a site like Wikipedia would give you a high quality backlink, and boost your search engine position in search results. So there are more factors to a backlink than initially thought.
