There are mainly two types of SEO, SEO which stands for Search Engine Optimization can be of two types, one is on page seo and the next is off page seo, in on page seo we do seo on our own website, by content and layout design etc, while in off page we build back links for our website.

White hat SEO(Legal Activities, follow google guidelines)
Black hat SEO(llegal Activities, Against google guidelines)
Gray hat seo(There are such no rule mention in webmaster guidelines that it is legal or illegal, mixture of both white hat as well as black hat)
