Trying to cover Fes and the desert in one trip without rushing

I've got about eight days total in Morocco and I'm really torn between spending more time in the north or just sticking around Marrakech and the desert areas. The thing is I really want to see Fes because everyone talks about the medina there being something special, but I also don't want to miss out on the Sahara experience. I've been looking at a 6 days tour from marrakech that goes all the way through the desert and ends in Fes, which seems perfect because I wouldn't have to backtrack and waste a whole day just driving back to where I started. My only hesitation is whether six days on a tour with a group might feel too structured and if I'll wish I had more free time to just wander around Fes on my own at the end. I'm thinking maybe the tour gives you a good introduction to everything and then I can explore Fes independently for a couple days after. Has anyone done a similar loop and felt like it was the right balance, or did you wish you had just focused on one region? Also any tips on what to pack for a longer tour like this with changing temperatures would be super helpful.
