I don't say that it is impossible to rank through social bookmarking sites but the chances are slim. Reddit is one of the social bookmarking sites I see ranking on SERP, and that's even rare.

To my knowledge, social bookmarking could increase awareness of a website, indirectly benefiting its organic rankings. However, from my experience, it cannot deliver much traffic. I'd prefer writing good quality content on new or established websites other doing social bookmarking. A lot of social bookmarking services offer spam services. Sincerely, I'd stay away from it.
