Link Cloaking is a method of redirecting or shortening the URLs. This technique is mostly used for Affiliate Links because Affiliate links are longer and shows merchant name so the affiliates use some plug-ins to change the URL in pretty one.

Michael I use Link Cloaking on my blog and the reason for this is that people some times try to remove my affiliate ids from the url if original link is given without Link Cloaking. Link cloaking have many benefits and applications and not just making the urls prettier as you have mentioned. Another benefit is that I can track the clicks if I am using a url shortening services and this tracking will give me exact analytics for the users who clicked on the link.

This way I can measure the success of the campaigns and can also track what improvements can be made to enhance the performance of campaigns. I would say that every affiliate must use Link Cloaking on websites or blogs if they are into affiliate marketing and promoting products.

Cloaking is a search engine optimization (SEO) technique in which the content presented to the search engine spider is different from that presented to the user's browser. This is done by delivering content based on the IP addresses or the User-Agent HTTP header of the user requesting the page.

Cloaking is another sleight-of-hand SEO technique. For SEO purposes, cloaking a site is a method of delivering a page based on who is requesting the page. For example, if a web site is using cloaking, when a regular visitor comes to the site, that visitor will see one page. But when a search crawler comes to the site, it sees a much more relevant, better optimized site.
