KL University, which holds over 45 years of legacy, has been honoured with the 1st Runner-Up Award in the category of Best Application and Uses of Renewable Energy at the 10th Edition of the CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2026, held at the India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi, on July 2 and 3, 2026. The award recognises KLU’s efforts in expanding renewable energy use and improving energy efficiency across its campus. The honour was received on behalf of the university by Mr. D. Seshi Reddy, Associate Dean, Planning and Development, and Dr. K. J. Brahma Chari, Associate Dean, Planning and Development, in the presence of senior representatives from the energy and industry sectors.
Renewable energy now meets half of electricity needs at the campus
The recognition comes as KLU continues to increase the share of clean energy in its overall electricity consumption.
The university has deployed 3,854.81 kWp of renewable energy capacity, generating 5.90 million kWh of clean energy during the academic year 2025-26. Renewable sources now meet 50.9% of the university’s total electricity requirement, compared with 24.9% in 2022-23.
Over the last three years, renewable energy generation at KLU has increased by 196%. The growth has been supported by the expansion of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, elevated-structure solar systems, and hybrid solar-wind systems across the campus.
The progress places KLU among the top universities in South India, working towards reducing dependence on conventional electricity through measurable renewable energy adoption.
A multi-layered approach to energy efficiency
KLU’s sustainability efforts extend beyond renewable energy generation. The university has also implemented a comprehensive energy management plan comprising 10 major Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).
These measures include LED retrofits, BLDC fans, radiant cooling systems, smart lighting controls, and other energy-saving technologies designed to improve the efficiency of campus infrastructure.
Together, these initiatives support the university’s approach of combining clean energy generation with reduced energy consumption.
Over 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided in one year
The environmental impact of the university’s renewable energy programme has also been substantial.
During 2025-26, KLU is estimated to have avoided 4,189 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Over the past four years, cumulative avoided emissions have crossed 11,785 tonnes.
The university’s sustainability efforts are further supported by GRIHA-rated buildings, green building certifications, and regular third-party energy audits. These measures help assess energy performance and strengthen the institution’s wider approach to sustainable campus development.
Recognition on a national platform
The award was presented in the presence of Mr. Abhishek Gupta, Head, International Appliances, Rooftop Solar & PE&A, Energy Efficiency Services Limited; Shri P. Shyam Sunder, Director, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India; and Shri Vivek Thakur, Executive Chairperson, Confederation of Indian Industry, Haryana.
The CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition brought together institutions and organisations from across the country working in the areas of energy efficiency and sustainable development.
For KLU, the 1st Runner-Up recognition marks another milestone in its ongoing work to expand renewable energy capacity, improve campus energy management, and reduce the environmental impact of its growing infrastructure.
