Is there a way to check if an e-mail address is not fake?

I sometimes google the email address itself and if it appears in stopforumspam.com, its something I might not consider. however if there is no result, it could be because its a new email address. Most of the search results provide good information and sometimes I find the user inquiring things online particularly to some classified sites of forums then I therefore consider its a legit email.
You can google the address of the email, that is a great suggestion from garfish. Also, if the email is [email protected] go to domain.com and see if it is a legitimate website. Browse that website to see if there is any reference to [email protected]
If the email has been sent to you, you can check if the sender is legitimate by looking at the headers of the message. Look at the return path, and the Received headers, these domain should match the email address domain, if they do not the sender is likely forged.
