Good question. Open GMail and click on "Settings" (top right next to your email adress). Then, click on the "Accounts" tab. Now click "edit info" next to your name and email address. Select the second option and type the display name you want.

You have 2 choices. You can change the name in the account or the FROM name only.For the account go to settings and then accounts and import and then change account settings and then edit profile.For just the FROM name go to settings and then accounts and import and then edit info under send mail as.
