How do you keep a track of backlinks for SEO?

You can check it on Google webmaster tools. Log in to your webmaster tools account. There under the 'Search Traffic' tab, find the tab 'Links to your site'. Once you click this tab, you will see the list of all sites linking to your site. Individually click on each link to check whether they belong to dubious sites such as porn sites or spammy sites. If you want to remove your link from a particular site, you can visit that site and look for the source of the link on that page and remove it. If thats impossible, you can contact the site owner to remove your link.

To track backlinks of any website, one can use Google webmaster tool.
Other tool that provides backlink information is Moz's opensite explorer.

There are different tools to do different things and they all have different prices. Because they source their data differently, they will also give you different answers. Many are free, but are limited in terms of their functionality or output.

If your goal is just to measure quantities of incoming links, they key is to pick one or two tools, baseline your starting point, and watch for trends over time. If you want to know who is linking to you and whether those links are worthwhile or harmful, you will most likely have to use a paid tool and do your homework to figure out how to categorize good vs bad.
