How Do These Social Sites Make Money?

I know that Facebook makes profit through their ads, but how about for those other sites like Twitter and Pinterest that don't post ads on their sites? How do they make money? Do they just invest on making the site being successful so it has a good value when it gets sold?
 
I am not sure how Pinterest makes money yet, but Twitter uses promotion to make money. They may have other ways too but I am not sure. Twitter has promoted accounts (under the who to follow section you may see one that says promoted) and promoted tweets. Those are they ways I know of for sure that Twitter makes money, I would assume there is more tho.

I am curious how Pinterest makes money now that you mention it and I wasn't able to find anything that would be guaranteed to be accurate, just speculation at the moment.
 
Simple. They do what we do, they make money from ads. Do you see the ads on the right border of your Facebook screen? Most of their income generates from that alone. There are a few other methods they use, but the money they get from that is very minimal. It includes games like Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc.
 
Well, all these sites make money via advertisements and collaborations with other websites. You do mention that Facebook uses adverts. But for Twitter, well, I think that they get money from other sites that allow people to login to their sites using their twitter names (maybe I am wrong but as of now, I do believe that there are a few websites that would be paying twitter - like Disquss).
 
I think Twitter make their money by offering to "promote" trending topics and profiles, personally I'm pleased they have not gone down the same route that MySpace did and plaster flashy ads all over the place.

On a slightly different note, I have often wondered why Wikipedia does not monetize their site and instead goes cap in hand to people begging for donations all the time.
