Yes they were downgraded by Google, but they are still important. I would not just stop using them. Search engines still reference the H1 tags to get an idea of what your site is about.

I would say, it can be a single keyword, but powerful enough to get you desired visitors for your site!

It's good to still use META Tags, they ain't a complete waste of time. Even though your site content is more important, it's good to have good meta tags to show correctly on search results.
