Does getting blog comments increase search engine rankings?

Is it worth it to purchase comments on your blog? Will this even increase your search engine rankings? Or would it be better to invest your precious cash into something else?

Blog comments are part of a larger set of indicators as to how popular your site is with the engines. They can both directly and indirectly increase your search engine rankings, though I wouldn't expect dramatic results from them. If you had to choose between getting some original high quality content for your site, and paying people to comment on your site, I would go with the high quality content instead.

Google has been forced to downplay the importance of comments over the years, due to so many people abusing them for backlinks to their own web sites.
