Commenting on popular blogs vs commenting on smaller blogs

Which do you think brings more clicks and readers to your blog; commenting and interacting on very popular blogs with thousands of comments on readers, or smaller ones?

I've always had more luck with commenting on smaller blogs, because then almost every comment is read, and the owner usually visits my blog as a "thank you" for supporting their small blog. You get more exposure through that, I've found, even though there are less people visiting the blog.

Commenting on smaller blogs is better

For me it have always work better to bring in traffic from smaller blogs. The same result you got is the result for me. The reason i think is that the smaller blogs get less comments and the comment you leave there keeps intact for some time. On the other hand if you leave comment on a bigger blog it will hide down under the pile of other comments so in one should comment more on smaller blogs if marketing and bringing visitors to your website is the core reason for leaving comments.

It might still depend to the comment you posted. If its substance can make a great impact to the readers and the owner of the blog, your link may bring much traffic. I usually check the website of the person who contributed a great point that adds contents and I might even comment back just to make sure he'll come back to check his comments.

I agree in the fact that it depends on the topic and the focus of the blog. For me personally I enjoy the smaller blogs thinking that I will get to know the community and really be heard. Unsure if it has really worked but I do like the smaller groups.
Although from a business point of view, the larger may bring in more of what you initially wanted to set out to do. To have a larger community will be more people seeing the work.

I usually post on popular blogs because it's a more effective way of getting traffic to your blog. I try to be as descriptive as possible on the article the blog was writing about, as well as my blog link so they can check me out as well. I think commenting on smaller blogs are good if you want to trade traffic, and help eachother get more popular.

I always prefer commenting on popular blogs. If the posts in the blog are flooded with lots of comments then I don't comment as it don't help much in bringing traffic. For me, a well descriptive comment in a popular blog is better than the comments on smaller blogs.

Commenting on popular blogs serve your purpose of getting huge traffic.
So try to post on popular blogs and relevant comment should be made to get approval of your comments.

Personally I feel that I am completely lost when on a big successful blog - there are too many commentators around and even the post OP doesnt not bother to respond back even if your comment had some value just because I feel they are too busy with writing their content and making the moolah.

The not so popular ones - many of them do care about their visitors and even if they dont pay your site a visit, they might just respond to the comment and that is good too. As for getting traffic, well, there are limited chances of getting visitors by only commenting. I think your content should have some substance too.

I comment on any post that I find useful, funny or just enjoy. This can be popular blogs or small blogs, as long as I like the post. I find that I probably get more traffic from smaller blogs tho as long as my comment is contributing to the conversation. Popular blogs can be overwhelming and I know that I personally only skim through most of the comments unless there are a lot of interesting comments there, so it is safe to say that others probably do this too. It can take half the day to read through all the comments sometimes!

Blog commenting is indispensable for any blog in it's prime. It can fetch you a lot of targeted traffic and potential subscribers, many of which may even become your customer for the product or service you have to offer. I try to be first one to comment on blogs like Searchengine and JohChow.com. I leave a long and engaging comments which gets the attention of the blog owner as well as other readers.

If you can be the first one to comment on any blog, be it a popular one or a small one and the comment is really engaging and pertaining to the content, you are bound t get some visitors to your blog. If you have a good landing page, they might even turn out to be your subscribers. That's how it works.

I've always aimed for high PR blogs but I never even thought of commenting on small blogs. I guess that way there's more chance of the blog owner etc replying/checking out your site. There's a tool online, but I can't remember the name of it. It allows you to search for blogs that have dofollow comments and high PR blogs.

Both of them are better but if high pr blog have your comment the link back to your website is of high pr that is what you are hoping for, a high pr link and some traffic

I think you are going to actually get more exposure on smaller blogs, because a popular blog will have more comments and thus people won't be as inclined to look at your comment and link as they would on a smaller blog.

I say comment on both!

With a bigger blog, there is more traffic so your link might be seen more by other readers and search engines.

However, with a smaller blog, the actual blogger might see your link more often and become a devoted reader of your blog as well.

I would shoot for something in between. If you are posting on a really large site such as Huffington Post or CNet, your comments will likely get drowned out by other new comments. They will only be on the first page for a very short period of time. Beyond that, people aren't probably going to bother flipping through several pages of comments.

There are some cooking blogs I comment on from time to time though that maybe get about 20-30 comments on each post - these seem to be more reasonable for getting some response from them, even if it's down the road. If someone finds your post at a later date in time.

Commenting on similar blog is always better for a blog. It helps in two ways. One is, you will get a high quality backlink (If you comment on similar site and High PR, DA, PA and good Alexa Rank) blog and second one is It helps to drive huge traffic to your blog (If you site niche match with the site)
