Accountant vs. Boekhouder: What’s the Key Difference?

I’ve been trying to understand the difference between an accountant and a boekhouder (bookkeeper) in the Netherlands. While both roles seem to deal with financial management, I’m not clear on when to hire one over the other.

Does an accountant offer services beyond what a boekhouder can do, or is the distinction mainly in terms of qualifications and experience? For example, can a boekhouder handle all the financial tasks for a small business, or would I need an accountant for certain tasks like tax advice or financial reporting?

In the Netherlands, the main difference between an accountant and a boekhouder (bookkeeper) lies in the scope of services and qualifications. An accountant, however, offers more specialized services such as financial reporting, tax advice, and strategic planning. They are also qualified to prepare annual financial statements and ensure compliance with Dutch accounting standards. If you only need basic financial management, a boekhouder will suffice, but for tax planning or complex financial matters, an accountant is recommended.
