Why we use Robots.txt File?

Robots.txt" is a regular text file that through its name, has special meaning to the majority of "honorable" robots on the web. By defining a few rules in this text file, you can instruct robots to not crawl and index certain files, directories within your site, or at all.
 
Robots.txt is a text file that lists webpages which contain instructions for search engines robots. The file lists webpages that are allowed and disallowed from search engine crawling.
 
The robots.txt is a simple text file in your web site that informs search engine bots how to crawl and index website or web pages. It is great when search engines frequently visit your site and index your content but often there are cases when indexing parts of your online content is not what you want.
 
Robots.txt file is used to tell Google, which pages of the website are allowed to crawl and which pages should be avoided. This file is placed in the root file of the website. Their is alternative to Robotx.txt file as well, you can use robots tag in each pages of the website and write value as Index or No Index. If you are not mentioning anything in robots tag, than by default it is allowed tag.

The only difference between the Robots.txt file and Robots tag is, file is uploaded only once but tag need to be added in each and every page of the website.
 
Robots.txt file gives instructions to web robots about the pages the website owner doesn't want to be crawled.
