If you are doing seo in a right way with out deceiving to user or search engine for example your site have original content with proper and related meta tags and file names in the code as well as you are submitting press release and articles on good websites and building back- links on related discussion forum with your website signatures, Its known as white hat SEO.
On the other hand, If you are doing keyword stuffing in the page and include duplicate content in your site for or hiding some content and using cloaking and other method redirect user on a different domain, known as black hat SEO.
