Both On page and Off page optimization helps to drive traffic over the website and to rank first place in search engine. SEO mainly target in search of professional keywords. On the other hand SMO or Social Media Optimization is a technique which helps to increase the brand awarness of the product or services and spread virally through all social medias. Both are impportant for SEO.

Both have their own advantages but I would like to say SEO is the better option because:

SEM: Search Engine Marketing: Costly, fast process, instantly gives result but if you stop paying to search engines, it will cease the marketing of your website, therefore it will lead to dropping down of your website's rank.
