What is the relationship between SEO, SEM and social media marketing?

SEO(search engine optimization), SEM(search engine marketing) and social marketing have relation. when website is hosted more traffic is gained when SEO is done and SEO is considered a part of SEM and social marketing is one of the technique of SEO. If proper SEM and SEO is done there will be ROI(return on investment).
 
SEO: Search Engine Optimization: A technique used to optimize a website according to the search engine's guidelines.
SEM: Search Engine Marketing: A paid technique used to promote a website or services by paying to the search engine to promote it on the top of the SERP. For example: PPC
SMM: Social Media Marketing: A type of Digital Marketing which is used to promote a website/services/products on various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.
