The main difference is that social bookmarking sites are used for creating backlinks while social media site are used for promotion.

In my opinion, the social networking sites made for social communication among peoples through networks and it is specifically meant for link building which is a common cause for both the sites.On the other way social book marking sites are made for popularity of your personal sites.

The difference between social media and bookmarking are as follows
social media- It is the media in which the people are added to each other for the networks and through which they give the informations to each other for example facebook, pinterest, tumblr and different sites.
Social bookmarking- It is the process of bookmarking in which the users can get the information through the bookmarks and blogs from which the users get the relevant information of what they want.
