The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that Search Engine Optimization is part of Search engine marketing or Search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines. SEO is about optimizing the web property to get better rankings in the search results while SEM goes beyond SEO. It involves other methods as well which can get you more search engine visitors like PPC advertising.
 
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. It is the techniques of getting traffic or visibility on search engine. It is a part of internet marketing.Pay per Click and Cost Per Click are part of Search engine marketing.

SEO is simply to make the site better for search engine in order to increase its visibility on the ..In the process of SEO you tend to rank your keywords on search results so that you’ll get traffic via search engine which is called organic traffic.

For example, when people search for "to buy cellphone" in a search engine..SEO will help the respective cellphone selling website to be placed in the search results whereas SEM will be the paid advertising displayed above or beside the search results.

Now,many people may not be interested in the ads and believe in the main results and click a website with higher pagerank.SEM may be more useful for ecommerce websites whereas if someone is searching for "to speed up my internet"...the SEM will allow ads like some hardware/internet booster but it is SEO which will help the blog/website which details the steps to improve internet speed..now a user will be more interested in performing those easy steps to improve the internet speed and the choice of hardware will be secondary.

SEO and SEM are not competitive.
