What is the difference between Project Management and Program Management?

People sometimes mix up program management with project management.

Project management is leading a team to complete a project, like building a new product, to reach
specific goals.

Managing a program with multiple related projects is part of program management. Since programs are usually tied to strategic initiatives, they tend to last longer and may even last forever.
Programs keep going even when the organisation changes. They help reach more
than one goal and are made up of many projects that work on different parts of
the larger strategic initiative.

Managing a project is to deliver value that moves a program forward in small steps. Even
though the focus is on artefacts and deliverables, project management still
involves strategy and planning. A project manager must figure out how to meet
the goals set at the beginning of the project. Amid a project's execution, a
manager is responsible for many things.

A project is a single, well-defined work with a clear goal and results. Even if a
project lasts several years, its main goal stays the same. The success of a
project can be measured by how well it meets the larger goals of the program as
a whole.
