Dr. Sumit (Sam) Garg is an Assistant Professor in Cataract, Refractive, and Corneal Surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine. He was raised in Orange County and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. He then completed a Masters degree at Boston University in 1998, after which he earned his Doctorate of Medicine from New York Medical College in 2003.
After completing an internship in internal medicine at UCLA Olive View Medical Center, Dr. Garg completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Garg then completed a fellowship in external disease, corneal and refractive surgery at The Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UCI. In July 2009, immediately following the completion of his fellowship training, he was recruited to the full-time faculty as a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor.
Dr. Garg has participated in numerous research projects, many of which he has presented at national meetings including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) the American Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Dr. Garg is actively participating in research related to the use of lasers in corneal transplantation and collagen cross-linking for keratoconus and corneal ectasia. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Garg has authored numerous book chapters including chapters on LASIK, PRK, PTK, ophthalmic imaging, and femtosecond laser assisted keratoplasty.
Dr. Garg also is actively involved in resident and fellow teaching. Dr. Garg is a highly-skilled clinician, surgeon, and teacher, and has particular expertise in refractive, cataract, corneal, and conjunctival surgery. Dr. Garg sees patients at two locations; the Gottschalk Medical Plaza in Irvine and Pavilion II in Orange at the UC Irvine Medical Center.
