What is Malware?

Malware, short for malicious software, is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of harmful or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content

The term malware is a contraction of malicious software. Put simply, malware is any piece of software that was written with the intent of doing harm to data, devices or to people.

Malware is software with malicious intent or one that can be perceived as malicious by its user. This is done to annoy pc user, disrupt network or PC, monetary gain (ads, carding, etc) or stealing information.
Sometimes viruses are excluded from this term, though not always. This was done for both historical reasons (Viruses was prevalent group of malware for long), and technical reasons: viruses modify files infected thus are harder to repair and require specific tools.
