What is Google Authorship and Author Authority?

Blogging has been a huge part of the web for many years and it allows people to be expressive, share helpful information, and have a voice online. One thing authors have lacked was protection for their work. There was no real way for authors to protect their content from spammers and web content scrapers.

Google has been the internet leader in more ways than one and it has started a system that aims to protect authors’ work and at the same time, build trust into the author and increase their reputation on the web.

What Is Author Rank?

With the onset of Google Plus social media network, none of us had any idea what Google had up its sleeves. Most of us thought it would be another Google Buzz-like social network that fails to stay competitive with other networks like Facebook and Twitter. But Google Plus has actually started to carve out its own space in the social media realm and has many interesting and unique aspects.

One of the most important features of Google Plus is its authorship system. The idea is that an author can build rank and trust (called Author Rank) based on the content they write all over the web. Google already has a way to determine your expertise at those subjects and it is only getting smarter in how it ranks authors and their content. For instance, if your content is constantly +1’ed and shared, it will be a strong signal that the content you create is of high quality and offers plenty of value.

The more quality content you publish online, the more likely you are to be ranked high by Google and considered an authority in your subject area.

Google Authorship also gives authors a way to protect their content. Authors that have set up Google Authorship correctly will receive some benefits in the search engine result pages as well. Google tends to rank these types of articles much higher than if they did not have proper authorship markup.

Anyone with a Google Plus profile can have their articles attributed to their name from any blog or website on the internet. Google Authorship is very easy to set up and it doesn’t matter if your website is static HTML or powered by a CMS such as WordPress.

Google Authorship was a program that allowed online authors to identify and verify their content with Google. This was accomplished by a two-way link between the author’s content across the web and his Google+ profile.

While the Authorship program was officially discontinued by Google on August 28, 2014, it is likely that Google’s interest in the value of the authority, trust, and reputation of an author in a given topical area is undiminished.
