Directory submission still works. I still get traffic from them and it helps me ranking in search results if they are from high ranking web directories. I would suggest you to submit to about 20 web directories daily. It can also be less like only 5. Don't submit at once to a lot of directories. The reason for this here, you submit to several web directories daily, but not all of them will be approved and if they will be approved, it will take some time. Sometimes it takes months to be listed. And the other thing is that after approval some of them delete your submissions after a year from your approval. Some of them may not some of them may delete earlier and you will have to resubmit.
So if we consider you submit to about 20 web directories daily, and assume that 5 of them are approved, they are approved after 15 days, so after the fifteenth day you will have every day 5 approvals. Let's also assume that after a year you will have to resubmit your listing, so after a year you get 5 approvals and resubmit 5 listing again which will not affect you anyway. You will always have backlinks and not lose them. But if you submit at once and get approval from 200 web directories, then after a year at once all your links will be deleted. So at a time you will have lost all your backlinks will affect directly search engines and this will affect your site where it will be harder to start ranking again at the search results.
