Canonicalization refers to individual web page that can be loaded/accessed from different URLS i.e different URL for the same content. Canonical tag helps to tell the search engine that the content of the page is the copied content refering the given URL.
 
A canonical tag is HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues occur when the same content is accessible from multiple URLs. Canonical tag can also be useful to solve www and non www canonical issue.
