i am doing a site for a local retailer, it will be a wordpress site and i am curious if anyone has uggestions as to what plug-in or plug-ins i should use that work best for seo these days?

It depends on the purpose of your site. If you want to build a site to sell your products like clothes, flower... You could try to use WooCommerce plugin. This is the best plugin that I known.
