What is 301 redirect?

A 301 is a response code which indicates a permanent redirects from one URL to another. Usually a 301 redirect includes the address to which the resource has been moved. Web browsers will typically follow 301 redirects to the new location automatically,without the need for user action.
 
It is a method of redirecting user from the old page url to the new page url. 301 redirect is a permanent redirect and is helpful in passing the link juice from the old url to the new url.

Yes, 301 do helps to pass the link juice to new URL, but also remember it doesn't pass link juice complete but less compared to 302 redirect. Thus it is recommended to use 301 redirect where ever required.
