I think, the Areas are currently the most important in organically ranking for a particular keyword is :
1) Keyword in the anchor text of external & internal back links.
2) Internal link structure.
3) Keyword density in content, title, description, alt tags, h1 tag etc.

Content marketing and authoritative link building are the most important thing.

SEO is and has always been about three things: properly built websites, relevant content, and inbound links. If you have these three things, then you're set... if you're missing any of these three things, then your organic traffic will suffer.
If you had to pick a "most important," it would be the relevant content. Google is a business, and their business is leading people to the most relevant websites for a given search. If you don't bother putting in the effort to create a website that possesses content that is relevant and interesting to humans, Google won't like you very much. Having great content leads to inbound links.
Naturally, if your site isn't built properly, your content will suffer, but even sites with a lot of architecture issues can still rank fairly well because of their great content.
