Website Thumbnail using PHP

Any PHP guru can you let me know how will i get the image of a website (Thumbnail image) and then re size it and save it as file. Have any body of you ever achieved it using PHP standard library. Also if you can guide me further if the image that will be created will have what extension. Will it be a .jpg , .gif or any other extension and can i change the type of image later on to change the extension.

There may be a ready made script available for generating the thumbnails of a website in PHP but there are lot of free websites out there which do offer this service for free so you can google for it to find out the list of websites and can try each of them one by one and see if it solves your purposes.
