Upgrading from Windows svr 2008r2 to 2012r2

Windows server 2008r2 is a brilliant server OS that is built on the same platform as Windows 7, both of which compliment each other and i would like to keep going with it. Sadly, there comes a time when you have to upgrade or fall behind. Is it worth doing an in-place upgrade or is it best to rebuild the server from scratch?
 
Haven't played with server OS's for ages. If you can just do an "upgrade" then go for that and let us know how it goes. If it fails then do a scratch install, but if it works then you'll save a lot of time. What do you have connected to your server?

A lot! As it is a production server i am not really in the best place to test it so was wondering if anyone has already tried it. There is an upgrade path available but it seems like a big jump from 2008 to 2012. I will probably upgrade a 2012 server to 2012r2 but not sure about the older OS's.
