Since Michael Jackson with his 'Bad' establish the foundations of "if you're bad molas more" film, especially in the 80s, has looked into the bad guy. If 'Alien' and 'Jaws' were the big stars (not to mention Darth Vader, but he did not have own franchise) in 80 movies "slasher" focused their verbena in the meanest baddies who has hit 70 film: Leatherface, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger ... While it is true that these villains were born as the star of your movie (saga own right) there are cases where the bad function has been more relevant than the protagonist and has acquired own rights to star in the remaining chapters of the saga.
