Skills For Managing A Dedicated Server

I am going to purchase a dedicated server but I have not done any server management in the past and neither am I good on the command line. Although the server comes with managed plan but still the ticket response time some times can become unacceptable so I am trying to learn how to manage my dedicated server.

What are the skills needed to manage a dedicated server and if there is any course or certification I can do that will help me out in future.
