Recently we launched our website and now thinking in terms of promoting our website. This is a news related website with a decent amount of content and new stories are being added to this website on daily basis. Please suggest some methods of marketing our website so that it can have more exposure. The suggestion i want from other people on this forum is should we hire a SEO firm to do optimization of our website for the search engines or can we survive and gain traffic without SEO over time.

I am asking this question because i have heard that SEO can have negative effects on a website too if it is not managed in a proper way. What can we do now in this scenario and what options are left now for us in promoting our website.

The second question is that if we go with a SEO company then what are the ways to measure the performance of hiring that company on our website. I have contacted one company and they say that they will do some SEO and the visitors will increase. Now please tell what other questions i need to ask this SEO company and what more should be written with the contract if i do with the SEO firm.

One of the factors which they have started giving importance too is social standing of a website as a genuine and large website will have people socially engaged with it. There are many other factors which they have started taken into account so you must hire a company which is up to date with the latest algo changes in seach engines and can make a strategy according to these changes.

You should watch that the company never use spam techniques such as use of duplicate or thin content, unnatural backlinks for site and also avoid over optimization of the site.
