The best way to rank better for your targeted keywords actually isn't by posting on a forum, not unless it's highly relevant to your niche, and your link anchor text is optimized.
The absolute best way to increase rankings for targeted keywords is to make sure your site is properly optimized. This includes quite a few steps like making sure all meta information is filled out properly, making sure youre only intentionally targeting 1 keyword per page, having a blog posting high-quality content to it on a regular basis(500 words + is great), and a tonne of other steps.
Trying to build unnatural backlinks is also going to be a bad idea... Google has really changed how they work things, and they really don't like seeing a whole bunch of backlinks from unrelated websites.. they're determined to provide a "high-quality" internet experience, which includes only showing the most relevant and high-quality search results. That said, networking with people in the same industry as yourself and building mutual relationships in which you can share backlinks is a good idea. 1 good, high quality backlink is much better than 10000 bad ones.
Posting high quality, properly optimized content on a regular basis is going to be your best bet though.
