Penguin and Panda

Google panda and penguin are the name of Google algorithm updates.

Good Panda will penalize sites that have low quality content and Google Penguin will penalize sites that are involving in web spam and Black Hat SEO techniques.
 
Panda is to prevent duplicate or value less content and Penguin is to prevent web spam or link spam so both are to prevent spamming on web.
 
Google Panda update mainly target content spam to provide better quality content to users as well as Google penguin target the link spam to prevent spamming site in search results.
 
Google Panda was first appeared in February, 2011 and Google Penguin was first rolled out in April, 2012.

Google Panda is the update to down rank the sites with Thin content, content farms and high bounce rate.

Google Penguin came in existence to fight with web spam, black hat techniques, low quality links, Over optimization and Keyword Stuffing.
 
Simple These two algorithms main aim is find out the black hat SEO techniques and demote such websites and promote the websites who is following white hat SEO techniques. The panda focusing on-page optimization and penguin concentrate on the off-page SEO, recently penguin is updated consequently, many low spamming backlinks website rank is dropped suddenly.
