If the intent of the experiment is to determine if Googlebot will crawl a nofollow link to then access dofollow links thereafter to dofollow pages... That needs to be what the test actually test.

The intent is to find out if Google will crawl dofollow links and pages after a nofollow link not just simply ignoring orphan pages.

It makes hyperlinks don't influence the ranking of your site, so when hyperlinks get punished by Google, your site still fine.
