Joomla site 301 & 404 error code

Hi to everyone...

I am finding difficulty in updating a Joomla site for 301 redirect and 404 error page creation.

The site posses htaccess.txt file

Codes available online were not worked fine.

Can anyone guide me to update the site I'm working? Need help from experts.....

Place these htaccess or robots in Cpanel not in the joomla. apply this code in .htaccess file to redirect 404 errors to the home page.
