Please tell me if some body on this forum know of any ways I can check if some body is also using my Wifi at home without my permission. Last month my bandwidth usage have increased very much and they have charged me for additional usage while I am a very normal internet user and even do not use my internet for streaming as such.

I am trying to find out what is wrong and who is stealing my bandwidth. My router is secured with a password and I am wondering how could some one potentially use my internet withWifi password in place.

Login to your router and you should be able to find a list of current connections, it should show you your PC name as a connection and if anyone else is on it will show their PC name.

I remember a girl next door kept stealing my girlfriends WiFi because it was unprotected, I could tell exactly who it was because of the PC name.

You can easily check it on your router configuration page. This could be called "Attached Devices" on Netgear or My Network on Verizon routers. You can then see the wired devices and wireless devices connected to your router. If you see a name that is not familiar, that means someone is stealing your WiFi, and it's time for you to change the password.

Actually, you would be amazed at how many people in Australia do not password lock their internet, wifi or even their mobile phones, it's only when they get the bill they get a nasty shock. The neighbors next door to me took three months to cotton on to the fact that the guy across the road was stealing their wifi and downloading ten to twenty gig per month from these people. And the thing was he bragged about this to anyone who would listen. My daughter ended up telling them to check their bill carefully, it was not long after this that this guy locked out. I should have turned him in to my neighbor but I am not a nark and they should have had it password locked. Sometimes people do need to learn tough lessons that hard way.

Yes, you should easliy be able to find out who is stealing it. The most apparent sign should be the slowness you encounter all of a sudden. Just protect is by a password.

One thing you can do is implement MAC address filtering on your network. You simply go to each of the machines that you own that you want to allow on your network, and enter their mac address list in your router as 'allow.' Then someone can't just jump on your network and use it. It's more effective than simple network encryption with a password.

You can do the MAC address route, or you could set up static IP addresses for each of your computers and only allowing those IP addresses on your network. You do have your WiFi password protected by the way, don't you? (never hurts to ask)

It's also possible you or someone in your household has some sort of malware on their computer that could be taking advantage of their internet connection and using it as a "bot" computer for all sorts of different purposes.

All of the above is spot on. If it's just a home network then mac filtering should be setup as well as wpa2 security, or at least wpa if your old devices don't support it (in which case a mac filter is essential). Also you could restrict the number of dhcp connection and setup static IPs. Also use letters and numbers for your password.

You would be amazed at how many people either don't put a password on their internet connections or leave the default password in place. If you take the advice of the people above, and make sure all computers in your house are clean, then you should eradicate the problem pretty quick. Change your password regularly as well.

Hello guys! Thanks for all your recommendations and explanations. I'm going to buy a netgear ac1750 wi-fi router and the question of net security is important for me. Now I know what to to to establish it.
