Is it possible to rank a website on top of Google without backlinks?

Hi,
Is it possible to rank a website on top of Google without backlinks? Please share if you have noted such experience?

It depends on the search term. You can use adwords and you would be ontop. I have seen google my business listing rank ontop without any website at all.

As for organic ranking, I have seen websites with few back links rank in the top five for very specific queries in low competition. and very localised. Otherwise i dont think its possible, atleast not yet.

Backlinks will make you rank higher, because a backlink is like a vote that your website is good. However, you don't always need backlinks to rank high: If the competition on the keywords you choose is low, you will rank high if your on-page SEO is OK.
