I phone 5 storage problems

Hello everyone, my friend just bought this I phone 5s about 4 months ago.
He recently told me that he isn't satisfied with it due to storage problems.
His i phone has a memory of 16GB. When ever he connects his phone it says that the majority of the storage is taken for other..
He uses I Tunes to listen the music via WiFi. But does this take so much space ?
He is now asking me to buy his I phone 5. Because a few days ago i said him that i m interested in it. What should i do ?
