Can some body suggest me ways how can i make sure that the data is safe from any wrong person in case the laptop gets stolen or in case the laptop is theft. To be more specific i want that no body can access my files in this worst scenario of theft. I am not too concerned about the hardware but how to keep my personal information and files lying on the disk of laptop safe in case of theft. Any ideas are welcome?

Encrypt all the important files on your hard drive, Windows has a built-in feature called Bitlocker Driver Encryption. This allows you to lock all files you want with a keyphrase, and until they figure out what the keyphrase is, they cannot access your files.

As long as your data is on the laptop, it is not safe from prying eyes. Yes, you can encrypt it and lock it but where there's a lock there will be a locksmith to crack it. So the only real way to be safe is not to save any data on your laptop. You have two ways of doing this. One is to save everything into a thumbdrive. The other is to save everything into a cloud service. Of the two, I would prefer the cloud service because a thumbdrive can still be stolen and cracked.

Windows has Bitlocker installed but I recommend using Truecrypt, it's the best data encryption software out there.

I agree that there are many encryption programs available and some of them are very good. Still this does not mean that they cannot be cracked. Once they are cracked, the cracking techinique will become easily available on the internet. Then the encrypted information will not be safe any more.

With Truecrypt it's near to impossible to crack the encryption.
