Not all backlinks are good so make sure backlinks are on sites that have similar content. The amount of backlinks needed depends on how much competition their is for the keywords your targeting.
If keywords have millions of sites listed you will need a lot of backlinks and sometimes never be able to be listed on first page of search results.
Try finding search terms and keywords with less sites listed and good traffic. You will need less backlinks. Thier is not set amount of backlinks it all depends on quality of backlinks and quality of sites linking to your site.
